Mars 12, Earth 0
Album by Raw Terra
Released in 2018 this is Raw Terra's first solo album of original songs: 'Mars 12, Earth 0' - soon after the same album's backing tracks were released: 'Mars 12, Earth 0 - (Instrumentals)' (a nod to 'Stack-o-Tracks'). The music ranges from Surf and Neo-60's to driving alt and indie rock and ends with a hypnotic tone poem.

Lyrics and (some) Liner Notes:
1 - Surf Song
Dedicated to The Halibuts and The Insect Surfers - two of the best neo-surf bands of Southern Callifornia (and two bands I had the good fortune to briefly play with). The original demo version (with drum machine) is on the instrumentals album.
Drums by Peter Curry.
2 - (Tryin') To Get Close To You
Show/hide lyricsSome say I'm crazy and that's no lie
But I'd be such a fool
I'd feel like a tool
If I didn't try to get close to you
But I would take that chance if you wanted me to
'Cause I feel like I'm back in school
And I could break every rule
Just tryin' to get close to you
Do I really turn to go?
It's hard to give you up
'Cause I've seen enough to know
I hope I haven't crossed a line somewhere
But you know it's really true
There's nothing a man won't do
If he's tryin' to get close to you
Do I really turn to go?
It's hard to give you up
'Cause I've seen enough to know
You're the one I want!
Some say I'm crazy, maybe that's no lie
But I'd feel like a fool
And life would seem so cruel
If I just couldn't get close to you
and life would seem so cruel
If I never could get close to you
and I'd break every rule
Just tryin' to get close to you
3 - Suicide Lincoln
Show/hide lyricsAnd I'm traveling all alone.
My tank is empty and the batteries low...
I should get out and walk but where would I go?
I'm really on my way!
I'm on the road, the road to Oblivion,
Rolling like a Suicide Lincoln, a Suicide Lincoln!
And she says tomorrow like it's a sure-fire tip.
She's gotta know that the road is long,
Can't she see we're driving with the engine light on?
Everybody tells me so!
I'm on the road, the road to Oblivion,
I'm rolling like a Suicide Lincoln, a Suicide Lincoln!
You've never seen a prequel, there's no sequel in sight.
You're far from childhood, retired from the fight,
Moving past the forest, deep into the night.
I'm really on my way!
I'm on the road, the road to Oblivion,
Rolling like a Suicide Lincoln, a Suicide Lincoln!
4 - Steve Say
Show/hide lyricsI'm late to class,
But I don't need a note,
'Cause I was born to pass.
I'd stay away from teachers
Who won't let you chew gum
High in the bleachers.
I know I heard Steve Say.
It's now, it's not too late,
That's what I heard Steve Say.
In my uniform,
I keep my eyes on the girls,
My hands on my horn.
I'm out on a limb,
I'm runnin' out of reasons,
Fallin' out of treason.
I know I heard Steve Say.
It's now, it's not too late,
That's what I heard Steve Say.
I know I heard Steve Say.
It's now, it's not too soon,
That's what I heard Steve Say.
That's what I heard Steve Say,
It's now, it's not too soon,
It's now, not too late,
That's what Steve said.
5 - Don't Pull Me Down (It's My World)
Drums by Peter Curry.
Show/hide lyricsTells you a lie, tells you another,
You're still there hanging on,
You're still there on his arm.
Waited this long, I can wait for ever.
You know what there is at stake,
There's no compromise I would make.
Don't Pull Me Down It's My World!
A moment in the light and down comes the curtain.
When the faceless eyes go home,
You're left with the night alone.
Don't Pull Me Down It's My World!
Don't Pull Me Down!
Don't Pull Me Down!
And there's no one to blame.
Just once I'd like to see
Something go right for me
Do I need to explain,
How it could be you, it could be you.
(I wish it were you).
Don't Pull Me Down - You're My World!
Don't Pull Me Down...
Don't Pull Me Down - You're My World!
6 - Around Midnight (The Wolf's Lair)
Gothic blues... dedicated to the lovely Evelyn Ankers.
Show/hide lyrics[dedicated to Evelyn Ankers and the full moon]
I heard the beating of the raven's wings,
Wild dogs ran through the air,
The shepherd lurched through the old wolf's lair,
And I left you trembling Around Midnight.
open at midnight,
And others heard the bells in the churchyard ring
out at midnight,
Wild dogs were thrown through the air,
The shepherd set fire to the old wolf's lair,
And I left you trembling Around Midnight.
about midnight,
The gypsy child saw the whole thing
- midnight,
Wild dogs ran through the air,
The shepherd turned from the wolf's lair,
I left you trembling Around Midnight,
You were so cold and helpless,
I felt you tremble Around Midnight.
7 - Monkey See, Monkey Do
While we were in The Roosters United Graham gave me pages of lyrics - this song stuck out and I wrote the music to his words - unfortunately he never got to hear a recorded version.
Show/hide lyricsEverybody's got to have a game.
Big shot, hip hop,
Everybody's trying to make a name.
Gangland, big plans,
Run to catch the money train.
Hangman, gunhand,
It's all water going down the drain...
See no evil, and you got no clue.
Everybody's so religious
Going 'round their monkey business.
Monkey See, Monkey Do,
You hear no evil, speak no truth.
Only love can conquer hate,
The whole damn world is going, is going ape.
Free porno on the internet.
Prophesies and weird disease,
Never let them see you sweat.
Incense, self-defense,
Tsunamis and technology.
It's a big stick, it's a hat trick,
And don't let anybody ride for free...
8 - Hey Kathleen!
Song recorded on 4track cassette (voice, guitars and bass) but final drums and percussion overdubbed with Logic Pro X.
Show/hide lyricsTell it to me straight,
Tell it to me now,
Don't make me wait.
Every night I call you
On the telephone.
How can it be,
You're never home?
That lights on a flame,
Since the first I saw you,
Never been the same.
I hope, I pray,
And yet I think,
Maybe it's the telephone,
It doesn't ring.
You've got the laughingest smile,
The prettiest eyes - I've ever seen...
Hey Kathleen!
You've got the laughingest smile,
The prettiest eyes - I have ever seen...
Hey Kathleen!
Hey Kathleen!
Oh! Kathleen,
Hey Kathleen!
9 - Love Will Find You
Show/hide lyricsI guess I've lost track of you.
And I know girl, so much has changed
From the world we thought we knew.
As someone caught between happiness and futility?
Oh I hope that Love Will Find You soon
And keep you company.
But why do you feel you've lost?
Many things are so over-rated
And not really worth the cost.
From all those who try to free you from its sway?
Oh I hope that Love Will Find You soon
And help you to break away.
I know you feel the rays.
But oh girl, there's no need to worry,
It's far from end of days!
Like an albatross lost on a storm-tossed sea?
Still I hope that Love Will Find You soon
And keep you floating free
Like an albatross lost on a storm-tossed sea?
Yes I hope that Love Will Find You soon
And keep you company.
And keep you company.
10 - (Waitin' for The) Mystery Train
In the spirit of Live At The Okeh Club, Live at Kelvin Hall, Got Live If You Want It!, and Jimmy Reed Live at Soul City, we have Raw Terra Live at Riverside Stadium, April 1, 2016.
Show/hide lyricsto move your memories,
And would you want a fireman or a brakeman
to track your dreams?
When you're out somewhere where the sky melts the ground
and visions fade,
Where there are no doubts and now somehow
all your debts have been paid.
It's on the endless track.
We'll jump that mystery train,
And never want to turn back.
that you can't reach it from here?
And maybe you've lost your way and you're
so lost in fear...
It's on the endless track.
We'll jump that mystery train,
And never want to turn back.
is set to fade away?
Then I think this time it's our time to break,
break away.
It's on the endless track.
We'll jump that Mystery Train,
And never want to turn back.
Runnin' on the endless track.
We'll jump that Mystery Train,
And never want to turn back,
never come back.
11 - Mars 12, Earth 0
A tone poem somewhat inspired by the work of Steve Reich and Phillip Glass - but with a backbeat and guitar. 'Mars 12, Earth 0' was begun on 4track cassette and reworked in Logic Pro X for the final version - the original 4track demo can be found on the album 'Mars 12, Earth 0 (Instrumentals)'.
